12 interior design tips to refresh your home in January

After the excess of Christmas, come January you might be feeling like your house is in desperate need of a refresh. Once you’ve packed away the Christmas decorations, take this opportunity to continue to reset your home with these 12 simple interior design ideas to refresh your home this January.

1. Swap your cushions

New cushions covers can totally transform the look and feel of a room in an instant. Go for brights to lift your mood, or cosy up with tactile textures like wool and fur. See this blog post for my favourite cushion combinations.

2. Get new bedding

Make your bed the star attraction of your bedroom with some new, indulgent bedding. Think sumptuously soft linens to make those cold winter nights more bearable.

3. Add a rug

A super quick interior design fix to add visual interest to a room. A rug provides character to a space, so switch things up and change the look and feel of a room with a new rug. Make sure you get one that is the right size for your room (read more here).

4. Move the furniture around

If you’ve got the space, a furniture shuffle can make you fall in love with your room again, knocking boredom on the head and giving you new corners to style and decorate.

5. Buy a lamp

Brighten up those dark, gloomy winter evenings with some soft decorative lighting. I’m currently loving this concrete lamp from B&M - a great dupe for the White Company Southwold Table Lamp. It would look great in the corner of a kitchen to add some warmth.

6. Style a sideboard

Refreshing the décor on a sideboard or console table is a quick way to breathe new life into a room. Group items in threes, add height with book stacks, add a vase of fresh foliage and pop a lamp on to complete the look.

7. Nurture a houseplant

If the space where the Christmas tree was is now feeling a little empty, why not fill the void with a tall houseplant? Fiddle leaf figs (if looked after well!) are a great plant for growing tall and adding interest to a blank space.

8. Refresh your artwork

Make the most of the January sales and snap up some discounted artwork from places like Juniqe and Desenio. Keep your existing artwork in the frames and they will be there ready for when you fancy a switch back.

9. Style a gallery wall

Don’t let your photos from 2023 sit on your phone - curate the best into a gallery wall. Mix and match frames of varying heights and print your photos in black and white for a stylish, cohesive display.

10. Snuggle with a throw

Add some texture to your living room or bedroom with the addition of a snuggly throw. Not only are they practical for keeping you warm, they are also a perfect styling addition to a room. Drape over a sofa arm, hang over a blanket ladder or pop a few in a blanket basket.

11. Bring in some fresh scents

A new scented candle can lift your mood, as well as make your home smell lovely and inviting. You can also add fragrance through wax melts, reed diffusers or an essential oil electric diffuser.

12. Create a flower arrangement

Add interest to a coffee table or dining table with some faux foliage that you can change with the seasons. For the new year, create a winter bouquet with sprigs of eucalyptus, pussy willow, thistles and cotton stems.
