8 under stairs ideas to make the most of an awkward space

That space under the stairs, with its awkward angles and low head height, often gets overlooked and ends up as a dumping ground for all manner of items. But with a little thought, planning and clever design, it’s the perfect space to gain additional functionality in your home and should definitely not be overlooked.

Here’s my 8 under stairs ideas to maximise your home’s potential.

1. Add a stylish bench

Double up on style and practicality with a custom-fit bench, with a panelled backdrop for peg hooks and practical storage baskets for shoes underneath, as seen in the home of @my.best.laid.plans.

2. Create a seating nook

If you’ve got the depth, squeeze in a loveseat or armchair, to create a cosy little nook for chilling or reading. Or go bespoke and add a custom made bench with storage underneath.

3. Make a tea and coffee station

If your stairs go into your kitchen area, make the most of this space by creating a dedicated area for making hot drinks. If you don’t like having appliances on show, consider hiding everything behind doors.

4. Set up an office space

If you’re short on space and need to have a home office somewhere, then this area under the stairs is the perfect place to slot in a little desk and chair. Add some pretty accessories and storage boxes to keep clutter at bay.

5. Go for bespoke storage

If your budget can afford it, maximise every last bit of space under the stairs with wall-to-wall pull out storage for coats, bags and shoes.

6. Display photos and artwork

Fill an otherwise empty space with a carefully curated gallery wall of photos. Pop a sideboard underneath the stairs for additional display space, or add some shelves to display frames and accessories.

7. Hide the washing machine

Under the stairs is the perfect solution for hiding bulky appliances like the washing machine or tumble dryer, freeing up additional space in the kitchen. House appliances behind doors for a streamlined appearance.

8. Add a downstairs toilet

This small space is the perfect room to have some fun with, as Emma Merry Styling has shown here in her downstairs cloakroom. Don’t let costly pipework put you off adding a convenient toilet under your stairs: a macerator pump offers an affordable solution, eliminating the need to extend your existing sewage system.
